Each line gets a Cyprus VAT rate, or reverse charge or intra-EU for business customers in other EU countries.

The original invoice's number.

What you're crediting
  1. Line 1

Enter the part you're crediting as positive amounts, at the VAT rate the invoice used. The credit note shows them as a reduction.

Reverse charge is for services to a business in another EU country. Intra-EU, exempt is for goods you send to a VAT-registered business in another EU country. Both need your customer's VAT number, and the credit note prints the wording for you.

What a credit note must include.

A credit note changes an invoice you've issued. It carries what the invoice did, names the invoice it changes, and says what changed.

  • Its own number

The next number in your credit note series, with no gaps. The original invoice keeps its number and stays as it was.
  • The invoice it corrects

The original invoice's number and date, so no one can mistake which sale changed.
  • The reason

Why the amount went down: goods returned, a discount agreed after the sale, work not delivered, or a mistake on the invoice.
  • The same two parties

Your company's name, address and VAT number, and your customer's, as they were on the invoice.
  • What's credited

The lines you're taking off, with quantities, net amounts and the VAT rate the invoice used.
  • The VAT reversed, in euro

The net reduction, the VAT taken off at each rate and the total credited, all in euro.

Credit notes, answered.

Whenever an invoice you've issued has to go down or be cancelled: goods returned, a discount agreed after the sale, a cancelled order, or a mistake in the price or the VAT. Never edit or delete the original invoice. The credit note sits beside it in your records.

Usually the return for the period you issue it in, not the period of the original invoice. A credit note that fixes a VAT mistake is different, because an error in an earlier return may mean correcting that return. Our guide to correcting a VAT return explains which is which.

Yes. Enter only the lines or amounts you're taking off. If the whole sale is cancelled, credit all of it. If the sale still stands at a different price, credit the original and issue a new invoice at the right price.

Not just because they haven't paid. A credit note is for a sale that changed: a return, a discount, a cancellation. The VAT on an invoice that stays unpaid is recovered through bad debt relief, which has its own conditions.

In sequence, with no gaps and no repeats, like invoices. Many businesses keep a separate series, such as CN-2026-001, so credit notes are easy to tell apart. The generator doesn't remember your last number, so check it before you send.

When the original invoice did, as with reverse-charge and intra-EU sales. A credit on an intra-EU sale changes your VIES return too, so report it there as well.
