Sumly vs QuickBooks
The short answer
Two honest cases. Read the one that sounds like you and skip the rest of the page.
Your company is Cypriot and has Cyprus filings to make
- You need the Cyprus VAT return itself, not a tax report you re-type into it
- You want VIES prepared from the same books, every month it's due
- You bank with Bank of Cyprus, Hellenic Bank, Alpha Bank or Eurobank
- You want formation, a Sumly certified bookkeeper, the auditor and the Yellow Slip in one product
- You want 30 days to test it on your real books
Cyprus is one country among several for you
- You run companies outside Cyprus too — Intuit sells dedicated UK and Ireland editions and lists bank feeds across dozens of countries
- You want stock control: inventory management is on Intuit's global feature menu and we don't list it on ours
- You want to plug the ledger into other software you already run — Connect Your Apps is one of the eleven items on Intuit's global feature menu
- You need several people in the file: Essentials includes 3 users, Plus at €45 includes 5 and Advanced at €75 includes 25, with accountant access on top
- Your accountant already works in QuickBooks and isn't moving
Where each one stops
A Cyprus company passes the same seven posts, whatever software keeps its books. This is how far each product walks with you.

Partly means part of the job. QuickBooks Online Global keeps a full general ledger, but Cyprus is absent from Intuit's bank-feed directory, and it tracks tax rates you create yourself rather than producing the Cyprus VAT return. QuickBooks details read on 26 August 2026 from Intuit's global pricing, bank-feeds, VAT/GST and country-chooser pages, its global help centre and its global terms of service. Both products change — if something here is out of date, tell us and we'll correct it.
€8 a month more, and the Cyprus return comes out of it
Base is €39/month against €31 list for QuickBooks Essentials — €8 a month, €96 a year. Paid yearly the gap is €18 across the whole year: €390 against €372. Essentials is the cheaper subscription and a ledger you configure yourself; the difference is what turns the ledger into the filing Cyprus asks you for.
Sumly Base
€39/month
- The whole platform — AI bookkeeping, bank reconciliation, invoicing
- The Cyprus VAT return, VIES and provisional tax prepared from your books
- €390 a year if you pay yearly — two months free
- 30-day free trial, no card needed
QuickBooks Online Essentials
€31/month list
- The tier that matches Base: multi-currency, recurring invoices and bill management all start here — Simple Start at €21 carries a dash against all three and caps the file at one user
- 3 users included plus accountant access; the chart of accounts is capped at 250 lines below Advanced
- Billed monthly. Intuit offers annual upfront billing at a discount but publishes no annual figure, and was advertising 90% off for 6 months when we checked
- Cyprus is on neither of Intuit's published lists of countries with built-in VAT rates, so the rates are yours to create
Sumly Premium
€390/month
- A Sumly certified bookkeeper reviews the books and files VAT and VIES
- Provisional and corporate tax handled, year-end prepared
- The Base platform included, so the books stay live in your own dashboard
- The year-end audit is ordered separately from a Partner Auditor, from €950
QuickBooks Essentials, plus whoever files
€31/month + the filing
- There is no bookkeeping service on Intuit's global feature menu, so the quarterly return is yours to assemble or someone else's to bill for
- The workflow is Prepare return, note the figures, Mark as filed — then re-key the numbers into the tax authority's own form
- Intuit states you can't e-file from QuickBooks, and that it doesn't support amended returns; corrections go through your tax agency
- Whatever a firm charges to do that sits on top of the €31 — the average Sumly user saves €3,210 a year against one
Side by side
Sumly prices exclude VAT. QuickBooks list prices read on 26 August 2026 from quickbooks.intuit.com/global/pricing, which states no VAT basis — Intuit's global terms of service say fees are billed "plus any and all applicable taxes, including without limitation VAT", so the euro figures are before Cyprus VAT.
The table stakes, met by both
No point pretending otherwise: on the core bookkeeping job these two look alike. Which is exactly why the rest of the page decides it.
A proper general ledger, both of them
- Invoicing, expenses, bank reconciliation and live reports
- Automated bank feeds and smart expense categorization — Intuit marks both on all four of its plans
- Receipt capture by photo, upload or email, which Intuit advertises without naming a tier
- A phone app either way; QuickBooks' runs on iPhone, iPad and Android at no extra cost
Neither one files your return
- Intuit says it plainly: you can't e-file from within QuickBooks, you file with the tax agency online
- Sumly prepares the Cyprus return and a person submits it through Tax For All
- On Base that person is you; on Premium it's your Sumly certified bookkeeper
- The difference isn't who presses send — it's whether the Cyprus return exists before someone does
What only Sumly does
It knows what a Cyprus return looks like
All 16 Cyprus VAT codes are mapped to the boxes of the official return, and VIES is built from the same books. In a global edition you enter the tax agency, tax number, reporting method and your own rates first, and assemble the Cyprus return afterwards.
It registers the company
Sumly forms Cyprus companies for €950 with a 100% approval guarantee — if the company isn't approved, you get every euro back. Because the same product does both jobs, your ledger opens the day you order the formation, while the registration is still in progress.
The people sit inside your dashboard
On Premium a Sumly certified bookkeeper works in your books rather than in someone else's system, so you keep live insight instead of emailing files. Partner Auditors, the Yellow Slip and tax residency sit alongside.
What the day-to-day actually looks like
Two of the jobs you'll do most, as they happen in the product.
The VAT return is a view of your books, not a form you fill in
Every Cyprus VAT code maps to a box on the official return, so when the period closes there is nothing to assemble — the return is generated from the ledger, ready to review. VIES comes from the same data. In QuickBooks Online Global the equivalent moment is Prepare return, note the figures, Mark as filed, and then type those figures into the Cyprus form yourself.
- 16 Cyprus VAT codes, each mapped to its box on the return
- VIES prepared from the same books, every month it's due
- Filed periods lock, so a submitted return can't move underneath you
Drop a document in and it books itself
Drag receipts and bills into the inbox, or forward them to your company's private Sumly address. The AI reads each one, does the double-entry on a ~200-account Cyprus chart of accounts, puts it on the right VAT code and matches it to the bank feed. QuickBooks captures receipts too — the difference is what sits underneath the entry once it lands.
- PDFs, photos and forwarded attachments, all read for you
- Every entry stays linked to the document it came from
- Bank feeds reconciled automatically, read-only throughout
Moving your books is an afternoon
Whichever way you switch, the mechanics are the same — and your history comes with you.
Connect your bank
Read-only feeds — Sumly can never move your money. Transactions start flowing in immediately.
Bring your opening balances
A dedicated opening-balance flow brings your existing balances across, so the year adds up and nothing is lost.
Run one month in parallel
Book a full month in both, compare the VAT figures, then cancel the one you're leaving. The 30-day free trial covers the whole parallel month, so you pay nothing until you've seen the proof.
Questions people actually ask
Is Sumly or QuickBooks better for a Cyprus limited company?
Sumly, for a Cyprus company. QuickBooks is a capable general ledger, but Intuit publishes no Cyprus edition: its own country chooser routes Cyprus to QuickBooks Online Global, Cyprus appears on neither of Intuit's published lists of countries whose VAT rates come built in, and no Cypriot bank appears in its bank-feed directory. So the subscription buys a ledger you configure yourself and a quarterly return you assemble yourself. Sumly maps all 16 Cyprus VAT codes to the boxes of the official return and prepares VIES from the same books. If your company isn't in Cyprus, none of that argument applies and QuickBooks may well be the better buy.
What is the main difference between Sumly and QuickBooks?
Country. QuickBooks serves the world through dedicated country editions and one global catch-all, and Cyprus lands in the catch-all. Sumly serves one country completely: the Cyprus VAT return, VIES and provisional tax come out of the books rather than being configured into existence, and the work around the books is in the same product — formation with a 100% approval guarantee, a Sumly certified bookkeeper on Premium, Partner Auditors at year end, the Yellow Slip and tax residency.
Is there a QuickBooks Cyprus edition?
No. Intuit's country chooser lists Cyprus under Europe and links it to quickbooks.intuit.com/eu/, which resolves to QuickBooks Global — the same destination as 48 other European and Caucasus countries. The United Kingdom and Ireland each get a dedicated edition; Cyprus doesn't. Intuit's global help centre has regional sites for Australia, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, South Africa and Ireland, and no Cyprus option at all.
Does QuickBooks support Cyprus VAT?
Only if you set it up yourself. Intuit's global VAT and GST page names 22 countries whose tax rates come pre-filled, and Cyprus is not among them. Its help article for the international product names six countries where a default set of VAT codes is created automatically — Ireland, Mexico, Malaysia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and South Africa — and Cyprus is not among those either. In the global product you enter the tax agency, tax number, reporting method and filing frequency yourself and add your own rates, and Intuit notes that the rates it does provide are informational and recommends consulting your own tax adviser. Sumly ships the Cyprus codes already mapped to the boxes of the return.
Does QuickBooks file my VAT return?
No, and Intuit says so in its own help centre: you can't e-file from within QuickBooks, and you file directly with your tax agency online. The workflow is Prepare return, note your figures, then Mark as filed — a status flag inside QuickBooks — with the numbers typed by hand into the authority's form. Intuit also states that QuickBooks Online doesn't support amended tax reporting and that corrections go through your tax agency. Sumly doesn't e-file either: it prepares the Cyprus return and a person submits it through Tax For All — you on Base, your Sumly certified bookkeeper on Premium.
Does QuickBooks connect to Cyprus banks?
Not through Intuit's own directory. Its European bank-feeds page lets you filter supported banks by country and offers 54 country entries; Cyprus is not one of them, and no Cypriot domestic bank appears anywhere in the directory. The European Union entry lists eight pan-European providers — ING, N26, Payoneer, PayPal, Qonto, Revolut, Soldo and Wise Business — so a Cyprus company banking with one of those would have a feed. Otherwise Intuit's stated fallback is manual upload or an in-app request for the bank. Institutions are added and removed regularly, so check before you buy. Sumly connects read-only to Bank of Cyprus, Hellenic Bank, Alpha Bank, Eurobank, Revolut Business and Wise.
What about payroll?
Intuit publishes no payroll product on its global site — the feature menu runs from Bank Feeds through to Connect Your Apps with no payroll entry — and the global help centre's full topic index has no payroll or employees category. QuickBooks Online Payroll shows up in Intuit's contact pickers for Australia and Canada, which are separate editions from the global product. Sumly has payroll as an add-on at €15 per employee a month: Social Insurance and GHS calculated, payslips out monthly, the run posting straight to the books.
How do the prices compare?
QuickBooks is cheaper on the subscription line, and it would be silly to pretend otherwise. Essentials lists at €31/month against €39 for Sumly Base — €8 a month, €96 a year. Paid yearly, Base is €390 for the year against €372 for Essentials at its published monthly price, so the gap narrows to €18 across the whole year; Intuit offers annual upfront billing at a discount but publishes no annual figure. What the difference buys is the Cyprus VAT return. Essentials is the fair tier to compare because multi-currency, recurring invoices and bill management all start there — Simple Start at €21 carries a dash against all three in Intuit's own comparison table and caps the file at one user. Sumly prices exclude VAT; Intuit's pricing page states no VAT basis, but its global terms say fees are charged plus applicable taxes including VAT. Checked 26 August 2026, when Intuit was advertising 90% off for 6 months on top of these list prices.
What does QuickBooks list that Sumly doesn't?
Inventory management is on Intuit's global feature menu and isn't on ours — if you carry stock, that alone may decide it. Intuit also sells dedicated editions for the United Kingdom and Ireland, publishes bank feeds across dozens of countries, and puts Connect Your Apps on its eleven-item global feature menu — if you run companies in more than one country, that breadth is a real reason to buy it. Essentials includes 3 named users plus your accountant, rising to 25 on Advanced. If one of these is the thing that decides it for you, ask us before you assume either way — and if QuickBooks is the better fit, we'd rather you knew now than three months in.
Can I switch from QuickBooks to Sumly mid-year?
Yes. A dedicated opening-balance flow brings your existing balances into Sumly, so your year still adds up and your history stays intact. Most founders run one month in parallel, compare the VAT figures, then cancel the old subscription — the 30-day free trial covers that parallel month. Or book a free call and we'll migrate your existing books for you.
