Sumly vs Sage
The short answer
Two honest cases. Read the one that sounds like you and skip the rest of the page.
Your company is Cypriot and you want the books to know it
- You want a Cyprus VAT return and a Cyprus VIES statement out of your own books, not an Irish or a British one
- You need the company registered, not just its books kept
- You want a Sumly certified bookkeeper working inside your own dashboard
- You want the Yellow Slip, tax residency and the year-end auditor arranged in the same product
- You want 30 days to test it on your real books
Cyprus is one of several places you keep books
- You also run a UK company — the UK edition submits the VAT return to HMRC through Making Tax Digital from inside the product
- You want stock control: inventory is on the Irish top plan and we don't list it on ours
- You want Sage Copilot, the AI assistant Sage includes in all three UK plans
- You'd rather buy desktop or perpetual software locally — a Cyprus reseller lists Sage 50 Accounts and Sage 200 Evolution
- Your accountant already runs their practice on Sage, which gives practices Sage Accounting free through Partner Edition
Where each one stops
A Cyprus company passes the same seven posts, whatever software keeps its books. This is how far each product walks with you.

Sage details read on 26 August 2026 from sage.com/en-ie and sage.com/en-gb, Sage's UK and Irish knowledge bases, the Sage Business Cloud Accounting terms, the Sage Accounting App Store listing, the Sage HR support site, the Sage Intacct release notes and the Cyprus reseller's own site. Both products change — if something here is out of date, tell us and we'll correct it.
€2 more a month, and the return is the Cyprus one
Sage's Irish plan is the closest thing a Cyprus company can buy — €37 a month, priced for an Irish business. Base is €39, so on the subscription line Sage is €2 cheaper. What the €2 buys is a ledger that produces the Cyprus VAT return and the Cyprus VIES statement instead of Irish ones. Pay yearly and even that gap goes: €390 for a year of Base against €444 for twelve months at Sage's list price.
Sumly Base
€39/month
- The whole platform — AI bookkeeping, bank reconciliation, invoicing
- The Cyprus VAT return, VIES and provisional tax prepared from your books
- €390 a year if you pay yearly — two months free
- 30-day free trial, no card needed
Sage Accounting (Ireland)
€37/month
- The tier that matches Base: unlimited users, purchase invoices, receipt and invoice capture and multi-currency all start here — Irish Start at €19 is single-user and has none of them
- Priced for an Irish business: it prepares a VAT return for Revenue and a VIES report for Revenue. There is no Cyprus edition to buy instead
- Document capture is metered where Sage publishes an allowance — 30 captures on UK Standard and 100 on UK Plus, then £0.20 per additional approved capture
- Sage's help centre says recurring invoices can't be raised in a foreign currency on any plan: "You aren't able to set up recurring invoices in a foreign currency."
Sumly Premium
€390/month
- A Sumly certified bookkeeper reviews the books and files VAT and VIES
- Provisional and corporate tax handled, year-end prepared
- The Base platform included, so the books stay live in your own dashboard
- The year-end audit is ordered separately from a Partner Auditor, from €950
Sage: bought from a firm, not from Sage
Quoted per engagement
- Sage sells software. The person who turns that ledger into a Cyprus VAT return, a VIES statement and audited accounts is a firm you hire and pay separately
- Sage's own Irish page gives accountants and bookkeepers in practice Sage Accounting free through Partner Edition, which tells you where the filing work is expected to sit
- If you go the local route instead, the Cyprus reseller lists Sage 50 Accounts and Sage 200 Evolution rather than Sage Accounting — and Sage's own UK site prices Sage 50 Accounts from £115 +VAT a month for Standard and £234 +VAT for Professional
- With Sumly the auditor is ordered in the same dashboard, from €950
Side by side
All prices exclude VAT; the sterling figures are the UK edition's and exclude 20% VAT. Sage list prices read on 26 August 2026 from sage.com/en-ie and sage.com/en-gb. Both editions were mid-promotion when we checked — 90% off for three months in Ireland and six in the UK — so the figures here are the list prices you land on afterwards, which is the only fair basis for a comparison.
The table stakes, met by both
No point pretending otherwise: on the core bookkeeping job these two look alike. Which is exactly why the rest of the page decides it.
Proper accounting, both of them
- A real double-entry ledger, not a spreadsheet with totals
- Sales invoices, purchase invoices, bank reconciliation and live reports
- Multi-currency invoicing and banking at the tier compared here
- Decades of accounting practice behind Sage, and none of this page disputes that
Modern software, both of them
- AI that reads receipts and bills instead of you typing them
- Bank feeds, so transactions arrive on their own
- An app for your phone, so a receipt is captured where you're handed it
- A free trial before you pay on either — one month free on the Irish Sage plans, 30 days on Sumly with no card needed
What only Sumly does
The return comes out Cypriot
Sage's country selector lists 30 sites and Cyprus is not one of them, so the return you get is Irish or British. Sumly maps every Cyprus VAT code to its box on the official Cyprus return, and prepares VIES and provisional tax from the same books.
It registers the company
Sumly forms Cyprus companies for €950 with a 100% approval guarantee — if the company isn't approved, you get every euro back. Accounting software can't do that, because it isn't in the formation business.
The people sit inside your dashboard
On Premium a Sumly certified bookkeeper works in your books rather than in someone else's system, so you keep live insight instead of emailing files. Partner Auditors and the Yellow Slip sit alongside.
What the day-to-day actually looks like
Two of the jobs you'll do most, as they happen in the product.
The VAT return is a view of your books, not a form you fill in
Every Cyprus VAT code maps to a box on the official return, so when the period closes there is nothing to assemble — the return is generated from the ledger, ready to review. VIES comes from the same data. You file it on Base; your Sumly certified bookkeeper files it on Premium. In Sage's UK edition the rate set is fixed at 20%, 5%, zero, exempt and no VAT, and Sage's help says you cannot create your own — the two Cyprus rates you need most are not in it.
- Every Cyprus VAT code mapped to its box on the official return
- VIES prepared from the same books, every month it's due
- Filed periods lock, so a submitted return can't move underneath you
Drop a document in and it books itself
Drag receipts and bills into the inbox, or forward them to your company's private Sumly address. The AI reads each one, does the double-entry on a ~200-account Cyprus chart of accounts, puts it on the right VAT code and matches it to the bank feed. Confirm a supplier once and everything from them is automatic after that — and there is no per-document line on the Sumly price list, where Sage's UK plans meter capture at £0.20 per approved capture beyond the allowance.
- PDFs, photos and forwarded attachments, all read for you
- Every entry stays linked to the document it came from
- Bank feeds reconciled automatically, read-only throughout
Moving your books is an afternoon
Whichever way you switch, the mechanics are the same — and your history comes with you.
Connect your bank
Read-only feeds — Sumly can never move your money. Transactions start flowing in immediately.
Bring your opening balances
A dedicated opening-balance flow brings your existing balances across, so the year adds up and nothing is lost.
Run one month in parallel
Book a full month in both, compare the VAT figures, then cancel the one you're leaving. The 30-day free trial covers the whole parallel month, so you pay nothing until you've seen the proof.
Questions people actually ask
Is Sumly or Sage better for a Cyprus limited company?
Sumly, on the thing a Cyprus company is actually buying. Sage is capable software with decades behind it, but it is sold country by country and publishes no Cyprus edition — so the return it prepares is Irish or British, on a chart of accounts built from a UK or Irish business type. Sumly prepares the Cyprus VAT return, VIES and provisional tax from your books, and adds formation, a Sumly certified bookkeeper and Partner Auditors around them. If you keep books in more than one country, that calculation changes and Sage is a serious answer.
Does Sage have a Cyprus edition?
No. The country selector on Sage's own Sage Accounting page lists 30 country sites, and Cyprus is not among them — nor is Greece. A Cyprus company therefore buys the UK edition, built for HMRC, or the Irish one, built for Revenue, or buys Sage 50 Accounts or Sage 200 Evolution through a local reseller. Sage Intacct publishes no Cyprus regional release either. To be fair about what that does and doesn't mean: the ledger, the invoicing, the capture and the multi-currency all work from anywhere, and the chart of accounts can be edited. The gap is the localisation and the filing, not the bookkeeping.
Can Sage Accounting produce a Cyprus VAT return?
Not as published. The Irish edition prepares a VAT return ready to submit to Revenue and the UK edition submits to HMRC through Making Tax Digital; neither is the Cyprus return. In the UK edition the VAT rates are a fixed set — standard 20%, lower 5%, zero, exempt and no VAT — and Sage's help centre states you cannot create your own custom VAT rates, so the Cyprus 19% and 9% rates are not there to select. In Sumly the Cyprus codes are already there and each one maps to a box on the official return.
How do the prices compare?
Sage is €2 a month cheaper on the subscription line, and it is worth saying that plainly. Sage Accounting in Ireland is €37 a month excluding VAT against €39 for Sumly Base. Ireland is the right comparison because it is the only euro-priced, English-language edition of Sage Accounting, and the Accounting plan rather than the €19 Start plan because Start is single-user with no purchase invoices, no document capture and no multi-currency. What the €2 buys is the country: the Irish plan produces an Irish VAT return and an Irish VIES report, Base produces the Cyprus ones. Over a year the gap closes anyway — Base billed yearly is €390 against €444 for twelve months at Sage's list price, €54 less. The UK plans are £20, £43 and £59 a month excluding 20% VAT, which makes the top plan £70.80 with the VAT on. All prices exclude VAT and were checked on 26 August 2026, when both editions were running a 90%-off promotion.
Is Sage's document capture unlimited?
No, and it is the cost that surprises people. On the plans where Sage publishes an allowance, capture is metered: 30 receipts and invoices a month on UK Standard, 100 on UK Plus, and £0.20 per additional approved capture after that. A company booking 150 documents a month on the most generous UK plan is paying £10 a month on top of the subscription. Sumly's price list has no per-document line on it at all.
Can Sage bill a retainer in dollars?
Not as a recurring invoice. Multi-currency banking and invoicing is the top-tier gate in both the Irish and the UK line-up, so on a cheaper plan you cannot invoice or bank in a second currency without upgrading — and even at the top, Sage's own help centre says: "You aren't able to set up recurring invoices in a foreign currency." For a Cyprus company billing monthly retainers in dollars or sterling that is the sort of limit you find in month two rather than in the demo.
Does Sage connect to Cyprus banks?
Sage doesn't publish an answer either way. Its Irish bank-feeds page names Irish and UK institutions, and the help articles both editions link to as the full list of supported banks don't actually list any — they tell you to search for your bank inside the product. So treat Cyprus bank feeds on Sage as something to test during a trial rather than as a yes or a no. Sumly connects over open banking to the banks Cyprus businesses actually use — Bank of Cyprus, Hellenic Bank, Alpha Bank, Eurobank, Revolut Business and Wise — always read-only, so Sumly can never move your money.
Do both actually file my VAT return?
It depends which return. Sage's UK edition genuinely transmits: you authorise Sage with HMRC and submit through Making Tax Digital from inside the product. The Irish edition prepares the return and you submit it on ROS, with Sage recording that it went by other means. Sumly prepares the Cyprus return the same way, and a person submits it through Tax For All — you on Base, your Sumly certified bookkeeper on Premium.
What does Sage list that Sumly doesn't?
Plenty, and most of it is scale. Their pages carry inventory management on the Irish top plan, Sage Copilot in all three UK plans, AI-powered mistake detection, a filing pipeline straight into HMRC, a desktop line in Sage 50 Accounts and Sage 200 Evolution sold locally through a Cyprus reseller, Sage Intacct above that, and Sage HR, which does list Cyprus among its supported countries for leave, timesheets and scheduling. None of that is on our pages. If one of them is the thing that decides it for you, ask us before you assume either way — and if Sage is the better fit, we'd rather you knew now than three months in.
Can I switch from Sage to Sumly mid-year?
Yes. Connect your bank for read-only feeds, bring your balances in through the opening-balance flow, and run one month in both before you cancel the other — the 30-day free trial covers that parallel month. If you'd rather not do it yourself, book a free call and we'll migrate your existing books for you.
