How to get an EORI number in Cyprus before your first shipment
Prepare a Cyprus EORI application with form C.1000, company records and representative authorisation, then connect customs documents to your bookkeeping.

In this guide7 sections
Your supplier has packed the goods, and the freight company asks for an EORI number. This is an awkward point to discover that a VAT number and a company registration number do not answer every customs question.
Arrange the registration before the shipment depends on it. Start with the legal entity that will act in the customs transaction, then make sure the company documents, application and shipping instructions identify that same entity.
What is an EORI number?
The European Commission explains that EORI is the identification used for customs operations such as import, export and transit, with only one valid EORI assigned to a person at a time. It is an identifier, not an approval for every type of goods or a calculation of customs duty.
For an operator established in the EU, the Commission directs registration to the customs authority in the member state where the operator is established. Check an existing registration before seeking another number elsewhere.
EORI and VAT registration have different purposes. Do not invent an EORI by adding a country prefix to a number you already hold. Obtain or validate the actual identifier.
Which Cyprus form do you need?
Cyprus Customs' national registration procedure directs operators established in Cyprus to form C.1000. The Department publishes current forms on its official forms page, including the representative-authorisation documents.
An operator outside the EU can need additional forms and a different analysis of where registration belongs. Do not copy a Cyprus company's application checklist into that case without checking the non-established-operator procedure.
Download the current form and instructions. Confirm the entity's name, registration details, address, contact person and business activity before signing.
Documents and signatures for a Cyprus company
The national procedure calls for company registration and directors' certificates, a VAT certificate where applicable, and appropriately certified authorisation where a representative acts. Follow its signature requirements as well as its document list.
| Check | Why to do it before submission |
|---|---|
| Exact legal name | The trading brand and company name may differ |
| Current directors' details | The person signing needs the appropriate authority |
| Registration and VAT details | Different identifiers should appear in the right fields |
| Business activity | Customs needs a clear description of the intended activity |
| Representative authorisation | A third party needs the required authority to act |
| Contact information | Queries must reach someone who can resolve them |
The C.1000 form separates company, identity and VAT information. Fill each field from the supporting document rather than reusing a number because its format looks plausible.
Submit, retain the result and validate the number
The published Cyprus procedure directs submission to the relevant district Customs office and explains the signature and postal arrangements for the applicable case. Keep a copy of the full application and resolve any follow-up request before assuming registration is complete.
Once issued, save the registration evidence and use the validation service linked from the Commission's EORI page. Pass the confirmed identifier to the customs representative with the matching company details.
Allow time for questions about incomplete or inconsistent documents. A planned sailing date does not make an unfinished application valid, so avoid making the shipment's arrival your registration deadline.
What does EORI leave for the shipment itself?
Registration does not settle commodity classification, customs value, origin, duty, import VAT or any product-specific restriction. Agree who will prepare the declaration and what evidence they need before the goods move.
For example, a business importing equipment should keep the supplier invoice, transport charges, customs declaration and evidence of duty and import VAT. Those documents explain different parts of the transaction. A freight-company payment alone may not show which amounts are fees, tax or costs of the equipment.
EU goods reporting raises separate questions. Our Intrastat guide explains the relevant goods statistics, and the VAT filing guide covers the VAT return. Having an EORI does not complete either filing.
How Sumly helps before and after registration
Sumly helps with EORI registration, including organising the company details and application records. We also handle the company's bookkeeping once purchases, shipping costs and customs documents start arriving.
That connection is useful for a business preparing its first import. The entity on the application should match the company whose purchases and import documents go into the books. If equipment will be capitalised, retain the costs needed for the asset and capital-allowance review.
Bring the intended transaction and any existing EORI details to the first discussion. We can agree the registration work without treating it as a promise to provide customs clearance or product approvals.
Common questions
Is my Cyprus VAT number automatically my EORI?
Do not assume so. EORI and VAT registration serve different purposes. Obtain or validate the actual EORI assigned to the legal entity.
Do I need a new EORI for every EU country?
The Commission states that a person can have only one valid EORI at a time. Check and use the existing registration rather than applying for duplicates.
Does EORI registration complete customs clearance?
No. Each shipment still needs the relevant declaration and checks on matters such as classification, value, origin, duty and import VAT.
